Taufers im Münstertal has a long history

Cultural fun in Taufers:

  • St. Johann’s Church is a jewel in the Romanesque artistic landscape. It is laid out in the form of a Greek cross
  • St. Michael in the Cemetery – Parish Museum: the showpiece of the museum is a gothic winged altar. All of the wooden sculptures exhibited in the museum come from the eight churches in the village and have a unique artistic value.
  • The Parish Church of St. Blasius was first mentioned in 1201. The old Parish Church was torn down in 1660 and rebuilt in its present form, decorated with beautiful murals by Italian painters and dedicated in 1663.
  • Schloss Rotund was build in the year 900 by order of the bishops of Chur and is one of the highest castles in Tyrol.
  • Schloss Reichenberg, which was originally in the possession of the bishops of Chur, passed to the Lords of Reichenberg in the mid-12th century. They were robber barons and visited fear and terror on the whole region. Neither castle was inhabited after 1680 and both were left to decay.
  • In the area around Taufers im Münstertal, Müstair Monastery (CH), a UNESCO world heritage site, the Benedictine Marienberg Monastery with its crypt and frescoes of Europe-wide importance, and the Churburg, which holds the largest private armoury in Europe are all worth a visit.
